Back to the Introduction
After you have completed the above activities, assist a colleague in cropping a photo with GIMP within the next 40 hours of work. Discuss with your manager how the experience went.
Next: Mastery Test
Consider the questions below then meet with your manager to discuss.
What steps are involved in cropping a photo?
What computer skills were necessary for you to complete a photo crop?
What do you like or dislike about photo cropping?
What was your reaction when you cropped your first photo?
Why is photo cropping important for library customers?
What did you learn about photography and its relationship to online social networking?
How would you react if a customer asked for help cropping a photo that you deemed inappropriate?
How would you go about learning more about GIMP and photo editing?
When a customer asks you about what cropping can accomplish, what will you tell them?
Next: Application
There are 4 simple steps to cropping a photo with GIMP:
#Open the Photo
#Draw a Box with the Rectangle Select Tool
#Crop to Selection
#Save the Changes
Open GIMP on your computer. If it is not on your staff computer, reserve a customer computer as your schedule allows.
This is what the icon usually looks like:
[img[Gimp Icon|ss/gimp-icon.jpg]]
3 windows will open:
*Toolbox
*Image Editing Window
*Layers Dialog
[img[3 Default GIMP Windows|ss/gimp.png]]
We will only be using the first 2 for our purposes, so ignore or close the Layers Dialog.
Open the photo that you are going to crop. If you do not have a photo, use this ss/angry-accordion.jpg (right click on the 'one' link, and save to your hard drive by selecting 'Save Link As').
Select 'File' from the Image Editing Window and then 'Open.'
[img[Open the File|ss/open.png]]
GIMP's Open Image menu will appear. Navigate to the photo that you want to crop (or the photo that you just downloaded). Select the photo's file name and click 'Open.'
The photo is now open in the Image Editing Window.
[img[The File is Open|ss/open1.png]]
To crop a photo, you will only need to use 1 tool from the toolbox: the Rectangle Select Tool. Click on the tool to select it.
[img[Select the Right Tool|ss/rec.png]]
Next, drag a box around the portion of the photo that you want to keep. To drag a box, hold down the left mouse button and move the cursor across the picture. It is usually easiest to start in the upper left and drag down towards the lower right, but you can drag the box any way you want.
In the below example, we will drag a box around the subject's face. Notice that the finger in the shot (lower left), the accordion, and a majority of the background is not selected.
[img[Drag A Selection|ss/selection.png]]
After you have made your selection, select 'Image' from the menu bar and then 'Crop to Selection.'
[img[Crop to Selection|ss/crop.png]]
After 'Crop to Selection' is clicked, the part of the photo that was not selected will be deleted, leaving only the portion of the photo that you wanted to keep.
[img[Cropped Image|ss/crop1.png]]
Now you are ready to save your changes!
[img[Save Your Work|ss/save.png]]
Note that selecting Save will copy your cropped photo over the original! The original will be lost forever.
Selecting Save As will allow you to save the cropped photo with a different file name and/or extension, thus keeping the original photo intact.
Here is a video of each step.

The jovial accordion player is now ready to upload her cropped profile picture to Facebook.
Next: Learning Activities
!!!What is Cropping?
This learning kit will show you how to crop a photo, demonstrate the tools are needed, invite you to participate, and then test your knowledge of the process. Work through each item on the left of this page in order.
When a photo is cropped, an unwanted portion of the photo is removed. Cropping can be used to improve the composition of the photo or remove distracting elements.

!!!Why Crop a Photo?
Next to setting up email addresses or applying for a jobs online, helping customers with their social networking sites is the most common computer assistance that we provide! Cropping photos is a very common request, and knowing how to efficiently and quickly crop a photo will help make our customers satisfied with the service that we provide, as well as free up time for us to assist other customers. Every social networking site (e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter) allows users to upload a photo of themselves for their profile. This helps their profile have a personalized identity while allowing other users to more easily locate the right Jane Smith on a site that could have hundreds of users with the same name.
|!Learn About PPI|
|The quality of a digital photo is measured in pixels per inch (PPI). This is simply the number of pixels (tiny dots) per inch in a digital photo. The higher the number, the more clarity there will be when a cropped photo is printed or enlarged. The PPI of most computer monitors is 72, but the PPI of the photo displayed on a monitor can be much higher than that.|
Cropping a profile photo can accomplish one or more of the following:
*Reduce the physical dimensions of a photo. Some sites have limitations to the size of photo they will accept.
*Remove other people. A profile picture should only be of the profile's owner! Crop a photo to remove your friends or your dog.
*Remove distracting elements. Your photo may be perfect, but the fire extinguisher hanging on the wall next to your head needs to go! For professional sites, crop out the beer bottles on the table next to you.
!!!What is GIMP?
GIMP (Short for the http://www.gnu.org Image Manipulation Program) is a free and open source photo editor. Since the software is free, it allowed the library to install it on all new computers (the TechCenter does not yet have it installed yet, but is eagerly awaiting its arrival) for no cost! Open source means that the source code of the program can be freely examined, modified, and redistributed. The user or the organization that uses the program can make adjustments to suit their needs and pass any improvements along to others! GIMP can do a majority of the tasks that Photoshop can do — without the hefty price tag. It can be used to crop photos (the focus of this learning kit), change photos from color to black and white, reduce noise, reduce image file size, and more. It is cross-platform, meaning that it can be used on a variety of operating systems (Linux, Windows, and OSX). Our customers now have a powerful photo editor at any computer they use at the library. It is important that we be comfortable assisting customers as they learn this newly available program.

!!!Play a Game!
The mouse movements required to play the classic game Tower of Hanoi are identical to the movements required to draw a crop box with the Rectangle Select Tool in GIMP. Once you are comforable with the mouse movements required, cropping an image will be much easier. Click the link below and play a couple rounds. Instructions on how to play the game are included alongside the game itself. Once you are finished, come back to this page for the next activity.

!!!Find and Crop a Photo
Use http://search.creativecommons.org/ to locate 1 fun image of your choice (click on the Flickr tab to limit your search to photographs). Try to find an image that has both distracting elements and an unattractive composition. Download the image and practice cropping it with GIMP in a variety of ways.
Estimated time required: 20 Minutes
!!!Take a Quiz
Take this multiple choice Quiz. It will allow you to review what you have learned and help you assess any areas that you should focus on before completing the rest of this learning kit.
Questions may have multiple answers. Place a check mark next to each answer that applies. When finished, click ‘check’ to see how many you got right. Keep trying until you get each answer correct.

When you crop a photo, you:
* apply a filter that causes vignetting.
** eliminate distracting elements by deleting part(s) of the photo.
** enhance the composition of the photo.
* reduce the saturation of a specific color in the photo.
When selecting a portion of a photo, in which direction must you drag the mouse?
* From upper right to lower left.
* From upper left to lower right.
* From lower right to upper left.
* From lower left to upper right.

Which of these is not one of the 3 default GIMP windows?
* Toolbox
* Image Editing Window
* Layers Dialog
** Color Balance Dialog
Open Source Software:
** is often free (cost).
* does not allow the user to modify the program.
** allows any modifications of a program to be redistributed to other users.
In terms of digital photography, what does PPI stand for?
* Plastic Pipe Institute
** Pixels per inch
* Producer price index
* Public Policy Initiative
What is the default PPI of most computer monitors?
** 72
* 42
* 256

In GIMP, to select a rectangular portion of a photo use the:
** Rectangle Select Tool
* Free Select Tool
* Alignment Tool
* Scale Tool
What is the difference between ‘Save’ and ‘Save As’?
** ‘Save’ copies over the original, keeping the same name and same location. ‘Save As’ allows the file name and location to be changed.
* ‘Save’ saves the file to a different drive or directory. ‘Save As’ allows the file name to be changed, but the file maintains its location.
To save a photo from the Internet to your computer, you must:
** Right click on the photo or link to the photo and select 'Save As' or 'Save Photo As' (depending on your browser).
* Press Ctrl+S on your keyboard.
* Click on 'File' and then 'Save.'
* Drag the photo from the Web browser into another tab.

Usage:
<<quiz>>
The macro will look for all tiddlers tagged "Question". It will generate a question for each of them. The example question tiddlers in the demo self-document how to author question tiddlers.
Of course, anyone can cheat by viewing source. But then, they'd be cheaters with their pants on fire.
More options in the future and a reset quiz button. Maybe even a secure tiddlyweb based server-side to save cheaters from themselves.
